If you put down a “cheap” big box store finish, then yes I’d be very worried about scratches. The wood most likely will be a different type and it will not take the stain the same as your floor. There will be plenty more too unfortunately. But in the flooring industry, those are referred to as ‘finishes’. It’s possible to make your hardwood floors solid black if you really want them to be that dark, but most of our clients choose something lighter like a black/white hardwax oil mix,  or Jacobean/Ebony stain mix or a Coffee brown color. We have a traditional cherry built in wall unit with an almost mahogany colored stain. Was thinking of going with 3 parts early american and 1 part english chestnut for a richer tone and depth. Either way it will make your decision much easier. Yes oil poly works well on dark floors. The finish system used on that floor had very high VOC’s and with good reason they are starting to be banned across the country. It’s even harder when you’re surfing the web trying to compare colors that don’t seem to match from one photo to the next. Only ever do 1 coat of stain. Unfortunately we don’t have heart pine floors here so I’m not experienced enough to give a professional opinion sorry. We are in the process of renovating and are starting our wood floors now. It sounds like you only have the fir in the living room – you could make a focal point out of that beautiful wood if you wanted to and not even bother trying to hide or blend it. 4) And again as you said, it could be a white oak vs red oak difference.
